Best Picture

Let’s begin with the biggest prize of the night—Best Picture. And there is steep competition among the ten nominated films.

This year, the Academy cast a wide net of movies for this category, including intense melodramas likeTár, dark comedies like the highly controversial Triangle of Sadness, and action-packed crowd-pleasers such as Top Gun: Maverick. Also, biographical and semi-autobiographical films are covered with Elvis and Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans.

Also nominated for Best Picture is Avatar: The Way of Water, the long-awaited sequel to the 2009 blockbuster, which continues the epic story that captivated audiences. And while you wait for it to become available to stream, you can watch the original film, Avatar on Disney+!

There is a great geographic diversity of films, too.

The trenches of World War II are the site of All Quiet on the Western Front, a German film that captures the tragic impact of war on ordinary soldiers.

Women Talking takes place in an isolated religious colony in the jungles of Bolivia.

And the lush landscapes of Ireland are on full display in The Banshees of Inisherin, where the depths of friendship are mined, to the surprisingly effective melding of Chinese martial arts, science fiction, and comic-drama in Everything Everywhere All at Once, the category is strikingly broad.
